Wow, that turtle is HUGE! I can't believe he just sat there for you and let you take pictures. Usually they jump in the water when we get anywhere close to them. He must have been so fat he didn't want to move.
I sent the pictures of this turtle to Glenn and he says it is a Common Snapping Turtle. He said...
"Common or Florida Snapping Turtle. They grow to 50 pounds and live about 40 years. An alligator snapping turtle has much more distinct ridges on its shell and skin and live much longer and grow much bigger. I saw one very similar to this one a couple of weeks ago that did not move, even as I rode right by him."
First off, we are avid airboaters and enjoy doing so on the Wacissa River. We are there most every weekend. We know that airboaters are not liked by most, but we try to be courteous to all boaters. We named our blog "FREEDOM", because everyone has the right to enjoy their free time as they choose. With our airboat we see more areas of the Wacissa River than can be imgined, and every trip we take down a back creek is a new adventure even though we may have ran the same creek the week before. So next time you see us, don't flip us off or put your fingers in your ears because we are out there doing the same thing you are, only in a different way. Remember "Freedom of Choice".
I tried to google this huge turtle and didn't find ANYTHING- but I'm going to keep looking cause I really want to know what he is!
